Two years ago, a catastrophic earthquake killed more than a quarter-million people in the poorest county in the Western Hemisphere. Today, more than 80 percent of Haiti residents continue to live below the poverty line, the majority of them in the slums, while ruled by corrupt elite. A country that was pledged $4.59 billion in aid has yet to see even half that, as reported by AFP, and is still living with the physical, emotional, and spiritual brokenness of one of the deadliest disasters of modern times. I am blessed to have the amazing opportunity to go and share God’s love with His wonderful children of Haiti. My heart breaks for this nation who has been ridiculed by corruption and devastation, and lacks the education and resources to know how to pull themselves out of poverty and despair. I feel called to travel to Haiti and show Christ’s love and acceptance by loving on Haitian orphans, and serve by helping with construction at the Northwest Haiti Christian Mission and building a water well for residents in nearby villages. The water well project is the reason I feel called to serve on this trip. Over the past two years, the Lord has really opened my eyes to the living conditions others in underdeveloped countries. Most all of the things I take for granted and consider pleasantries many people lack, mainly due to the absence of access. In many of the villages of Haiti we will be serving, women gather together each morning and walk an average of four miles round trip, just to get drinking water for her family for the day. Through prayer and discernment, I feel called to use my knowledge and talents in both agriculture and communications to serve those less fortunate than me, both in America and overseas. While I am still unsure of the capacity of my international service, I am hopeful that my time serving in Haiti will bring further clarity to God’s plan for my future. The costs are high to go and serve, but I am fully trusting that God will provide my way for this trip and I will absolutely be doing my part as well. Our team is holding fundraisers and I will be saving money to contribute as well. With that said, the majority of the cost tends to come from donations so every little bit counts! Thank you so much for stopping by!
