Adventures in Secular Song Lyrics, Part II

"Dig" by Incubus

This song, while most certainly secular in nature, has been sung by myself many many times as an act of worship to the King of Kings.

There are a few lines in the first verse which speak to me as if the Father was telling me them directly:

Look me in the eye
and ask for forgiveness;
We'll make a pact to never speak that word again.
Yes, you are my friend...

My sin is the word that that will never be spoken again.  God promises that when you repent He throws the sin away from Him as far as the east is from the west.

The chorus is a beautiful plea from man to God:

If I turn into another,
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me.
Sing this song!
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone...

Man this is awesome worship stuff right here.  I sing out to the Father! I am asking Him to dig me out of my dirt, my sin, and my ugliness. Whenever I become something or someone that is not representative of Jesus, He will be faithful to uncover me from all those things above so that I can be a better example of Christ to the world.

And how wonderful is the hope that we have in Jesus?  Even if EVERYTHING around us is gone (and one day it will be), we still have our Lord, and He is forever!

The second verse and the subsequent second bridge contain some wonderful imagery of Christ as the cure/healer of man:

We all have a sickness
That cleverly attaches and multiplies
No matter how we try.

So when sickness turns my ego up
I know you'll act as a clever medicine...

I love the metaphor here!  Jesus is the true antidote, the true medicine, the true healer of my being.  All man is sick, poisoned from birth. All man has fallen short.  We can try so hard, but without the grace of God we are merely slaves to sickness and death.  It is so incredible, though, that Jesus is the cure for our sickness.  And the best part is that His medicine is ETERNAL!  Hallelujah!

This song is a gorgeous cry for help and a bold cry of faith.  In these lyrics I have faith that Jesus will ""dig me up from under" all the sin, all the sickness, and all the filth that I bury myself under daily.

Peace and Love,
Noel
