In our first region (Food), we have some interesting match-ups in the first round. This blog will allow for in depth discussion and extrapolation of the match-ups from the point of view of the interns here at the Wesley. We will give you our opinions on the match-up, and then you can go to the Facebook page and vote yourself on the winners!
Student Union Building (SUB) vs. Chimy's
Pros of eating at the SUB: super dooper convenient (on campus, it's perfect for that quick meal in between classes); free if you have a meal plan (college students love free stuff!); you get to see and eat with all of your friends or possibly even the Wesley interns; you get multiple choices as to what to eat (pizza, chicken, sandwiches, asian); it has some entertainment aspects if you are done eating (tv's, pool tables); and you can eat while reading books and/or magazines at the Barnes and Noble
Cons of eating at the SUB: as many choices as there are, one CAN get tired of the food; if you don't have a meal plan, it's a little pricey; it can get crazy crowded (Tech is up to 32,000 students now!); being on campus all the time can get annoying
Pros of eating at Chimy's: location is wonderful, right across the street from campus; they honor a certain type of debit card holder, so you get free stuff when you use it there; their nachos are a local legend; good college scene (lots of students makes for a fun outing)
Cons of eating at Chimy's: pricey for college students; the people can get a little too crazy (it's also a local drinking hot spot); it can get pretty crowded; at night you can't get in if you are under 21; parking can be a nightmare; food can be quite greasy
Interns' choice: SUB (the convenience and social factor was too much for Chimy's to handle)
Sazon vs. Home Cafe
Pros of eating at Sazon: great food (the naked wooly mammoth is delicious!); location is good, right across street from campus; the staff is very friendly (good management, too); the chipotle ranch dipping sauce is worth the trip alone; Sazon is a big supporter of Texas Tech athletics
Cons of eating at Sazon: food is pricey; it gets very crowded at peak hours; small dining area not suitable for large groups; debit card machine often does not work; not a whole lot of variety of food (simple tex-mex type food only)
Pros of eating at Home Cafe: very creative dishes (sweet potato fries, incredible mac and cheese); good drink selection (homemade lemonade and ice tea are phenomenal); all of their food choices are freakin' good (especially their pot pies); very vintage feel (drink out of mason jars!); lots of healthy food options; seriously, the food is really really really good
Cons of eating at Home Cafe: location isn't great (must drive there); eating hours can be difficult (not open for dinner); you will pay for your food ($10 at least for a dish); hard to get in to if you come after noon during lunch; always out of some items if you come late
Interns' choice: It's a toss-up. The interns are split on this decision.
Spanky's vs. Wesley Free Lunch
Pros of eating at Spanky's: FRIED CHEESE (so dang good); great atmosphere (college students, tv's everywhere); good location, right across street from campus; it was started by Tech students; they have good Sonic-like ice for their drinks; great burgers; good place before or after a football game
Cons of eating at Spanky's: line can be very long; VERY greasy; a bit pricey for the amount you get; not really any healthy food options
Pros of eating at Wesley Free Lunch: FREE FOOD (this is huge); great location, across street from campus; you can play ping pong for hours after you eat; you get to see everyone you love (and even some you don't); good music playing during lunch; happens TWICE a WEEK (Sunday and Wednesday); and did we mention it's FREE?
Cons of eating at Wesley Free Lunch: well, you're not eating a five star meal; you never know what you're going to be eating until you get there; only a few drink options (lemonade, tea, and water)
Interns' Choice: Wesley Free Lunch. We really didn't have a choice because we work for the Wesley :)
1 Guy's from Italy vs. Thai Pepper
Pros of eating at 1 Guy's: great location, right across street from campus; outstanding lunch deal ($5 for calzone and drink is great); great tasting pizza and calzones; Lubbock area staple restaurant; good place to eat before or after football game; pretty cheap ($5 or less); nice staff; two locations in Lubbock
Cons of eating at 1 Guy's: parking is miserable; small dining area not suitable for big groups; can get crowded during lunch hours; you can wait for a while if you order a specialty pizza; drink machines break sometimes
Pros of eating at Thai Pepper: outstanding food (the best Pad Thai in Lubbock); the crunchy noodles you get as an appetizer are FANTASTIC; great service; price is more than fair
Cons of eating at Thai Pepper: weird hours (never really know when it's open or close); small dining area; can be very crowded and loud; location is not great
Interns' Choice: It's a toss-up. Once again, the Interns are split on this decision.
